JOHN MURPHY | LEAD PASTOR
One Interesting fact about me:
I hate green beans. They squeak on my teeth (it's a real thing) and had to have been some sort of a result of the fall.
What do you do here at Veritas?
I oversee the preaching, vision and leadership development at Veritas. I also spend a lot of time meeting with and pouring into other church planters through a few networks we’re a part of (Acts29, Fellowship Associates and the Summit Network).
How did you learn about Jesus?
I was blessed to be raised in a godly home with parents who loved Jesus. I made a decision to follow Jesus at an early age, but spent most of my childhood/teenage/college years with a dysfunctional view of grace. I basically thought Jesus’ grace “got me on the team” and that it was my job to work hard to “stay on the team.” I had a crisis of faith after getting out of the military, studied my way through the book of Acts for the first time and was blown away by what I saw. Jesus’ grace got me on the team, Jesus’ grace keeps me on the team, and it’s by Jesus’ grace that I am being made new. (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Favorite expression or phrase?
"Murphy’s eat what is set in front of them and are grateful for it.” This phrase (along with copious amounts of squash, turnips and other terrible things that should never be spoken of, much less eaten) was forced upon me almost daily as a child.
Favorite cup of coffee?
The one that is in my hand at any given moment.
You will never see me without…
Lord-willing, a beard.
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
I married my best friend, Kristen, in 2005. We have 2 strapping young boys, Jack and Kian, and an adorable daughter, Audra Kate.
