FIRST CORINTHIANS
1 Corinthians is a wild book to find in our bibles. From Paul’s rebuke over the factions taking place in the church to the rampant sexual immorality that they had become known for, it is safe to say that the church at Corinth was a mess. Surprisingly, instead of listing his grievances first Paul starts his letter by speaking gospel truth over the Corinthians.
And much to our surprise, Paul also ends with speaking gospel truth to the Corinthians: “Now I would remind you, brothers of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.” - 1 Corinthians 15:1-2
So why preach through a book of the bible about a church riddled with so much chaos? It turns out that we aren’t so different. The good news that Paul proclaimed to this divided Corinthian church is still the same good news that unites us today. Our hope for this series is that as we walk passage by passage through this book, it would deepen our love for Jesus and our shared identity in the gospel. We also hope to be shaped by the biblical teachings in this book about sex, idols, worship, leadership, spiritual gifts, and how we are to relate to one another as Christ followers. Finally we hope to continue to see a culture of relational ownership take root among those of us that claim Veritas as our church home.
In short, our hope is to move from being a church divided by our differences to being united by Jesus.
