THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

We all have our hope wrapped up in something: a relationship, a career, a worldview, some type of functional savior. These things give us motivation, purpose, and “life”. But as many of us know these things will let us down at one point or other, and we are left realizing that we have never experienced real life or at least the type of life that we are made to experince, eternal life.

The writer of The Gospel of John gets this, and he paints Jesus as the greatest fulfillment of any of our hopes or dreams, the source of eternal life. John writes:

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. - John 20:30–31 (ESV)

The theme of John’s Gospel is that Jesus is the long-awaited, promised Messiah and Son of God. By believing in Jesus, people have eternal life.
