Why did Veritas Church choose the book of Deuteronomy for our fall semester of Bible Studies?
Believe it or not, the book of Deuteronomy is foundational in the life of the Christian. In Matthew 22, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6 when he is asked about the most important commandment in all of God’s law. I’m willing to bet that you could recite Jesus’s words about the greatest commandment from memory if I asked you to do so! Jesus quotes exclusively from Deuteronomy each time Satan tempts Him in the wilderness (see Matthew 4). Paul also relies heavily on the message of Deuteronomy when he writes the book of Romans.
Despite the indispensable role that the book of Deuteronomy plays within the Biblical narrative, many Christians feel intimidated to open this book. I want to provide Veritas Church with the tools that we need to open the book of Deuteronomy and feel confident in our ability to interpret it.
Therefore, we will spend 8 weeks studying Deuteronomy this fall using the Inductive Bible Study Method. We will ask simple questions to learn profound truths contained within this book. Those simple questions are:
What does this text say?
What does this text mean?
Where do we see Christ in this text? (Hint: we see Christ all over the book of Deuteronomy)
How do I apply this text to my life today?
I have written a study guide that leads participants through the book of Deuteronomy, and I cannot wait to share this resource with you! The study guide contains 4 days of homework per week where participants will respond to prompts and read supplemental information that will help them come to a deeper understanding of the book of Deuteronomy.
Weekly Bible Study meetings launch on September 9, 2026. Our Bible Study Leaders will use our meeting times to review some of the noteworthy questions in the study guide, and they will also provide participants with some supplemental teaching! I have intentionally designed our study guide and meeting times to create a dialogue-based, active learning environment because that is the kind of environment that helps us to learn best!
