When we die, we will stand before God in judgement. And like it or not, Jesus will be your judge. The good news in this passage is that Jesus not only has the authority to judge but he has the power to grant eternal life - because he is God.

In the gospel, Jesus removes social, racial, and cultural barriers that keep us from him, covers our shame, and satisfies us with himself. The result of being changed by Jesus is proclaiming the good news of who he is to others.

In order to see the kingdom of God, you must be born again, which Jesus says is a work not of our own doing but of the Spirit. Like Nicodemus, many of us are perplexed by the words of Jesus. The grace of God is displayed in that he doesn’t demand us to will ourselves into being ‘born again’. He sees us, meets us in our helplessness, and offers himself as the unfailing object of our faith.

It has become tradition to end the year as one big family. 2019 was no different. We came together, kids and adults, to be reminded of the fact that we’re called to serve others as followers of Jesus, but before we do, we remember all that Jesus has done for us. Out of that overflow of love, we love and serve others. Jesus gave us a reminder of that love when he instituted communion. Sometimes, we simply need to be reminded when we forget.

Often we come to the scriptures it feels like we aren’t fed by God’s word because we are unsure of what to do with it. The simple tools of observation, interpretation, and application help us immensely when seeking to truly understand the real meaning of the text. In 1 Peter 1:3-5 we see simple glorious truths: God is worthy of praise, God has made a way for us to be born again, God is giving us a heavenly inheritance that cannot change, and we are being kept by God through faith.

In this last part of the gospel of Luke we, like the disciples, are invited to see and to trust Jesus, the scriptures, and the promise of the Spirit.

This story of disciples that knew the facts but couldn’t see Jesus makes us ask the question: What does it take for someone to see Jesus as their hope? Through the text we see that there must be opening of their eyes by Jesus himself to see him and believe. And it’s often in the mundane things that Jesus ultimately reveals himself.

An incredible truth from a familiar parable, the Prodigal Son, that God loves sinners. In this sermon we see that God joyfully demonstrates is love for prodigals and the prideful, at great cost to himself, by sending Jesus to die for us.

There is a great invitation from Jesus to join the banquet of his kingdom, but it is only the humble, who know the worth of the invitation, that enter.

In this passage Jesus says to the Pharisees and Lawyers: You look ok on the outside, but really you are not ok on the inside. Jesus doesn't ever wound for the sake of inflicting pain. Jesus is going to reveal their deepest faults so that they can be cleansed from within.
